  1. Pre-heat the barbecue to low.
  2. Place the turkey into a large disposable aluminum dish.
  3. Rub half of the butter on the inside and outside of the turkey, then brush with chicken broth.
  4. Combine the rest of the butter with the onions, apples and garlic. Stuff the turkey with this mixture.
  5. Tuck the skin of the turkey around the neck underneath it to plug the cavity, and then turn the turkey vertically.
  6. Pour the beer into the other opening. Then place the turkey, breast side up, into the dish.
  7. Place the dish on the barbecue and cover with aluminum foil.
  8. If you are using a heat resistant meat thermometer, insert it into the breast of the turkey before closing the lid.
  9. Cook until the internal temperature reaches 170 ° F (75 ° C), about 5½ hours for a 20-pound turkey.
  10. Remove the aluminum foil in the last 30 minutes of cooking to allow the skin to brown.
  11. Let rest for 20 minutes before slicing.
